Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... ostracized. While her handicapped half-sister, Nessarose, is described as "tragically beautiful," Elphaba's green skin makes her "beautifully tragic." She's gotten used to the stares over time, but that doesn't mean they don't hurt any less.

Living... at Shiz University, with her sister and her roommate, popular Galinda (or “Glinda”) Upland. Although Elphaba and Glinda initially hate each other, they eventually learn to look past their differences and become close friends.

Profession... student at Shiz and unofficial caretaker for her sister. Since Nessarose is stuck in a wheelchair, Elphaba's often been stuck in the role of looking after her, and that doesn't change just because Elphaba's going to college. Although she knows she should pity her, Elphaba can't help but be resentful of her half-sister. Pretty and pious, Nessa's always been their father's favorite, and she's never had to deal with the social ostracism Elphaba's always suffered.

Interests... books, magic, and Animal rights. In Oz, there are animals and then there are Animals: Animals can talk, while animals cannot. However, due to their appearance, Animals are often discriminated against – like Elphaba – especially now that the Wizard of Oz is in power.

Relationship Status... single, but interested. But not only is Fiyero – as a prince – far out of Elphaba's league, he also seems more interested in Glinda.

Challenge... fighting for the rights of Animal. Something – or someone – is taking away the ability to speak from Animals, and Elphaba is determined to stop them. To do so, however, Elphaba is going not only going to challenge the rules of Shiz, but those of Oz itself – and even, if it comes to it, the Wizard himself. But Elphaba's not afraid to break a few rules. As she puts it, "I don't cause commotions, I am one."

Personality... jaded and sarcastic, but also deeply insecure. Independent, strong-willed, and intelligent, Elphaba may give off an aura of aloofness, but don't let that fool you. Years of being a social outcast have taken a toll on her self-esteem, and beneath her abrasive exterior is a girl willing to be wicked if it means she can do good.
