Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in London high society. Eloise is the fifth eldest in her family, raised in a large home in the early 1800s. Edmund, her father, died young, leaving his wife Violet to raise eight polite yet opinionated children. Eloise was given an excellent education and spends much of her time reading and writing.

Living… in her family home, in one of the wealthier London neighborhoods. Eloise cares little for the balls and dress fittings, watching with disgust as her sister Daphne to be a debutante. Eloise confides in her older brother, Benedict, about her desire for something more than being a bride.

Profession… unemployed, and loving it. Eloise is next in line to enter the social season after Daphne, so she feels her time is running out. She dreams of a successful career, so her interest is piqued by Lady Whistledown, an anonymous reporter covering the 1813 social season. Even though Lady Whistledown is scandalous and controversial, Eloise envies her success.

Interests… reading, Lady Whistledown, and the occasional cigarette. Eloise can often be found planted on the couch reading while Daphne practices the piano. At night, Eloise slips out to the swings where she indulges in a cigarette, and her brother Benedict occasionally joins her. At balls and parties, Eloise is tucked in a corner writing down notes, notes that will hopefully point her in the direction of Lady Whistledown’s true identity.

Relationship status… single. Eloise is not yet of age, and boys are the farthest thing from her mind. Eloise and her dear friend Penelope Featherington are still figuring out how babies are conceived. Romance is nowhere on the agenda.

Challenge… finding something meaningful, even though she feels powerless. Eloise doesn’t want to “squawk and settle,” as she puts it; she wants to fly. Eloise has found temporary purpose aiding in the Queen’s hunt for Lady Whistledown’s identity, but when this game is over, Eloise isn’t sure what comes next.

Personality… witty, confident, and independent. Eloise has quite a few opinions and isn’t afraid to share them with the world. Eloise thrives around other intellectuals, but she is more timid when it comes to finding a husband. Eloise is kind and appreciates the relationships in her life, but a part of her won’t stop yearning for something more.
