Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… on her own. Keen basically raised herself – she was abandoned by her father, a career criminal, and left to fend for herself after her mother’s death.

Living… through a transitional period. Elizabeth has just moved from New York to Washington D.C. with her husband, Tom, though she didn’t realize how disruptive her new FBI job could be to their relationship.

Profession… FBI profiler. Elizabeth’s entire life changed on her first day on the new job when international criminal Raymond Reddington walked into FBI headquarters and asked to speak with her. According to Reddington (“Red”), the two have a special bond, though he’s choosing to remain silent on the details. Now Red and Elizabeth are rolling up many of his criminal contacts on what he calls his “blacklist.”

Relationship Status… married to Tom, who seems to be the sweetest man in the world. (Whether he’s everything he seems, though, remains to be seen.) Elizabeth and Tom want to start a family together and adopt a child. Elizabeth sees a child as a saving grace: “I’m board-certified in forensic psychology, and yet I operate under the delusion that I can rewrite my past if I have kids of my own.”

Challenge… figuring out why Raymond Reddington is obsessed with her. Elizabeth has always had “a deep yearning to understand and relate to the criminal mind,” yet she can’t manage to wrap her brain around Red. He seems to know her better than she knows herself. He chose to work specifically with her for a reason, and now she needs to figure out what that reason is.

Personality… hardworking, tough, and a bit lost. Elizabeth’s old team in New York used to call her “sir” on account of her strictness, yet she’s not entire clueless about her faults: “Like most kids who raised themselves, I can display narcissistic behavior.”
