Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in a strangely empty apartment. An older man named Håkan lives there with her, but despite her (apparent) youth, Eli seems to be the one in charge.

Profession… none. Although, since she’s around 12 years old, that make sense. But her curious neighbor Oskar hasn’t seen her at school, either. In fact, he’s never seen her anywhere but in the courtyard of their apartment building.

Interests… collecting and puzzle-solving. Eli doesn’t have many possessions, but those she does have tend to be old, valuable, or both. She also has a keen mind for puzzle-solving, mastering Oskar’s Rubik’s cube more quickly than he can believe.

Relationship Status… ambiguous. At first she tries to push Oskar away, but the two are drawn together, despite Eli’s reservations. Maybe she sees some of herself in Oskar. Maybe she’s just tired of being alone. Either way, their friendship (or budding young romance?) is something they navigateday by day.

Challenge… keeping her secret. There’s a reason that Eli lives on the edge of society; a reason that she usually pushes people away. She may look like a 12-year-old girl, but that’s definitely not the whole story. And she’s not that good at concealing that she’s different, even if she tries. If she wants to help Oskar, who is being bullied horribly at school, she’ll have to decide whether he is more important than her safety.

Personality… secretive, impulsive, and a bit imperious. Eli hides most of her emotions behind a mask, so it’s difficult to tell what the motivations are for her actions. She’s comfortable giving commands and making statements, but most conversation beyond that leaves her out of her depth. Because of this, when she breaks her shell and smiles, it’s surprising in its warmth.
