Grew up… without worries. Elena had a happy, carefree, and sheltered childhood with her best friends Bonnie and Caroline. She started dating one of her oldest friends, Matt, at the start of her sophomore year in high school. After a bonfire party before junior year, her parents were driving her home when the car unexpectedly spun out of control and drove off Wickery Bridge. Elena was the only survivor. Unbeknownst to her, Stefan Salvatore was nearby at the time and managed to save her.
Living… in a haze. It’s only been a couple of months since the accident, and Elena is trying her hardest to stay strong for her family. She writes, “Dear diary, today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. My smile will say, ‘I’m fine, thank you. Yes, I feel much better.’ I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh, be someone new. It’s the only way I will make it through.”
Profession… high school student and former cheerleader. Elena has just started her junior year at Mystic Falls High School. She is an honor student and one of the most popular girls in school.
Interests… journals, writing, adventure, and the unknown. While dating Matt, Elena realized that the two of them could eventually marry, buy a house, have a couple of kids, and never leave Mystic Falls. Because that future scared her, Elena began to yearn for more. The first time Damon meets her, he accurately states: “You want a love that consumes you. You want passion, and adventure, and even a little danger.”
Relationship Status… complicated. Elena is immediately attracted to the new boy at school, Stefan Salvatore, and feels a deep connection with him. But, Stefan is reluctant to tell Elena that he is a vampire – instead allowing her to fall in love with his human side. Personality… smart, compassionate, loyal, empathetic, and at times self-involved. Before meeting Stephan, Elena was the quintessential girl next-door – beautiful, caring, and easy to get along with. After Stefan enters her life, Elena is forced to grow from a sad young girl to a strong woman.
