Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Los Angeles. Elaine has just split up with her long-term boyfriend, an ex-fighter pilot named Ted Striker. The sensitive and fragile Ted couldn’t seem to hold down a steady job due to the trauma he experienced in the recent war.

Profession… flight attendant. Elaine spends most of her days up in the air, serving drinks to passengers. This is another reason why she and Ted split up: His fear of flying wasn’t compatible with her job.

Interests… helping the less fortunate. Elaine once belonged to the U.S. Peace Corps, where she was assigned to an isolated tribe, the Molombos. She also enjoys “surfing, backgammon and men who aren’t afraid to cry.”

Relationship Status… separated from Ted. While Elaine doesn’t think that their relationship can last, he is determined to get her back and earn her respect. As she tells him, “It takes so many things to make love last. Most of all it takes respect. And I can’t live with a man I don’t respect.”

Challenge… taking charge and helping Ted conquer his fear of flying. It turns out that, in order to get her back, Ted has boarded the same flight to Chicago. When the pilots are incapacitated due to food poisoning, Ted seems to be the only one onboard capable of landing the plane safely. When this happens, she announces, “There’s no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?”

Personality… sweet, tender, the all-American girl next door. Elaine is a stunning woman who catches the eye of many men. She’s just looking for a strong, handsome man to be her partner in life.
