Effie White

Grew up… in a poor area of Detroit. But Effie really grew up onstage. Her voice always made her the star of the show.

Living… her wildest dream. Things start happening for Effie and her group, The Dreamettes, when they meet charismatic record executive Curtis Taylor, Jr. Effie never imagined that she’d one day support R&B star Jimmy “Thunder” Early.  Well, maybe she did – Effie always seemed to believe her big voice would take her places.

Profession… lead singer of the Dreamettes. While the other two members of the group, Deena and Lorrell, certainly have talent, neither of them can hit the notes that Effie can. That’s why Effie is all the more confused when Curtis demotes her from center stage and puts the slimmer, attractive Deena in the spotlight.

Relationship Status… in love with her manager, Curtis. Unfortunately for Effie, Curtis, a lothario of sorts, has eyes for the ravishing Deena instead. When Curtis promotes Deena to lead singer, Effie sees it as a double heartbreak. Effie isn’t one to go quietly: “Deena’s beautiful, and she’s always been beautiful… but I’ve got the voice, Curtis! I’ve got the voice! You can’t put me in the back. You just can’t!”

Challenge… getting back into the spotlight. After a series of personal and professional disasters Effie finds herself out of the music business and back on the streets of Detroit, right where she started. Meanwhile “Deena Jones & the Dreams” are recording hit after hit in Los Angeles.

Personality… tenacious, temperamental, and tough. Effie is determined to record another hit and get herself back into the charts. She knows that she has the talent to do it – she just needs to find a way to bypass the powerful Curtis.
