Grew Up… in Bombay, India. Before she was born, Edwina’s mother, Mary, left London to marry a secretary, who already had a child named Kate—quite the scandal in the 19th century. After Mr. Sharma died, Kate and Mary sheltered Edwina from poverty and raised her to be an accomplished young woman.
Visiting… London, England. To find Edwina a husband, Lady Danbury, a dowager in British society and an old friend of Mary, has agreed to host Edwina, Kate, and Mary. If this season goes successfully, London will soon become Edwina’s new home.
Profession… debutante. Edwina is fluent in 6 languages; can play the sitar, maruli and pianoforte; and knows all the proper dances for English balls thanks to her sister, who ensured she would be fit for high society. With the help of Lady Danbury’s influence, Edwina is named Diamond of the season by the Queen, making her the most desirable bachelorette.
Interests… reading. As the locals are abuzz over a horse race and people argue which steed will best the others, Edwina merely points out that one of the horses reminds her of Nectar, which turns out to be a character in a book.
Relationship Status… searching. Edwina is looking for love, which is somewhat of a rarity in this world of matchmaking based on familial duties and dowry sizes. Despite this, Edwina is committed to the endeavor. After all, Mary left this society behind to find love, and her parents remained happily married for the rest of her father’s life. Perhaps Edwina can do the same.
Challenge… finding the right husband. As this season’s Diamond, Edwina is sorting through a crowd of suitors who wish to gain her hand in marriage, under the watchful eye of her sister. One such suitor, Viscount Bridgerton, has caught her attention, but Kate is adamant that he will not make a good match. Edwina thinks Kate is sabotaging her love life. As Edwina says to Kate, “He is the one I want. The Viscount. His family, this home, the life he offers me… I am not quite certain I know why he has not yet made his declaration. It is because of you. You hate one another.”
Personality… intelligent, poised, and romantic. Edwina is well-educated and proud of it, sharing her appreciation of literature with suitors. She is also very comfortable amongst the English nobility, after working hard to become the elegant woman she was expected to be. No wonder she has become the Diamond.
