Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Living… every waking moment in the office. By having a computer chip implanted in his brain, he and his co-workers are unable to access any of their memories from home while at work and vice versa. As a severed worker, Dylan’s “innie” (his inner self at work) has embraced his role and accepted the uncertainty of possessing no knowledge of his outside life, even often taking a lighthearted approach when speculating on the life of his outer self. Dylan’s “innie” spends exorbitant amounts of time with his coworkers and always enjoys meeting deadlines and friendly competition at work, which is how he spends most, if not all, of his time.
Profession… employee in the Macro Data Refinement Department at Lumon Industries. Dylan is very good at what he does, whatever that is. As a result of the secretive nature of Lumon, he does not really know what it is that he is doing at his desk job. Regardless, he takes his responsibilities seriously. His job has a number of perks, including paintball and coffee cozies.
Interests… waffle parties, Chinese finger traps, and incentives of any kind. Dylan takes great pride in his work and professional accomplishments as evidenced by his desk drawers full of all kinds of prizes amassed over his time at Lumon for his good work.
Relationship Status… single. There can be a lot of confusion around relationship status as a severed worker’s “innie,” as there is no way to know whether you are desperately single or happily married on the outside. But Dylan’s “innie” makes it clear that on the inside he is unmistakably single.
Challenge… staying in line. Overall, Dylan loves working—or at least competing with his coworkers. A bit stubborn when his superiors upset him or cross a line, he can be difficult to whip back into shape and is not afraid to push back.
Personality… driven, work-crazy, and a bit immature. Admittedly, Dylan can be childish sometimes, however, when it comes to what he truly cares about, he is quick to snap everything together and grow up. His determination and persistence can be easily transferable to something more constructive than his menial job.
