Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in some far-off, demented land. Dr. Gonzo, an attorney at law, isn’t your average person. His friend Raoul Duke describes the fat Samoan as “one of God’s own prototypes [....] Too weird to live, too rare to die.”

Living… in Los Angeles, though the pollution can make the city stifling. Dr. Gonzo's in desperate need of a vacation, and when the chance comes up to leave town, Gonzo jumps on the opportunity.

Visiting… Las Vegas. The good doctor is accompanying his friend Duke on a business trip, giving him excellent advice along the way: “As your attorney, I advise you to rent a very fast car with no top. And you’ll need the cocaine.”

Interests… drugs. Gonzo has an appetite for booze, coke, heroin, and any kind of psychedelic substance he can get his hands on. Gonzo finds a certain amount of freedom in losing his mind, and there’s no substance out there too strong for the Samoan attorney. But that doesn't mean Gonzo plans on having all the fun: “as your attorney," he tells Duke, "I advise you to take a hit out of the little brown bottle in my shaving kit. You won’t need much, just a tiny taste.”

Challenge… staying alive and sane on his savage journey to the heart of the American dream. Dr. Gonzo might think he can handle it, but all the acid and all booze are starting to make him disturbingly violent.

Personality… wild, unhinged, and impossible to control. With Dr. Gonzo, you’re really along for the ride. There is no way to go toe-to-toe with him, so you might as well just soak in his drug-fueled presence and hope for the best. Best of all, as a lawyer, he’ll be able to get you out of all the legal trouble you will doubtless find yourself in the morning after.
