Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… witnessing undue suffering and pain on a daily basis. Doc Cochran has been in the medical profession long enough to know that there is no rhyme or reason to the afflictions of man. As the Doc says to Reverend Smith of God allowing such physical suffering, “If this is His will, He is a son of a bitch.”

Living… in the mining camp of Deadwood in the Dakota Territories. Doc ventured out to the frontier in order to satisfy the shortage of medical professionals.

Profession… physician. Doc Cochran has some real authority as the only one in the settlement with medical knowledge. The two most powerful residents of Deadwood, Al Swearengen and Cy Tolliver, rely on the Doc to treat their prized working girls, and sometimes themselves.

Relationship Status... single. Doc didn’t arrive in rough-and-tumble Deadwood with a wife, just like most of the men, and it’s not exactly a good place to find eligible single women. At least, not many who aren’t prostitutes.

Challenge… keeping Deadwood healthy. Life on the frontier is full of hazards, and Doc Cochran often has to fix severe wounds under unsanitary conditions. He feels a moral obligation to treat the residents, even if their conditions are beyond healing. He is an experienced and knowledgeable doctor, but he realizes better than most that the medical field circa the 1870s still has much to learn.

Personality… truly moral. The Doc is perhaps the only person in Deadwood who has the power to keep Al Swearengen and Cy Tolliver at least somewhat in check. Even though he must sometimes serve the interests of the town’s nefarious businessmen, he does his best to use his position of influence to stand up to them when he needs to.He’s a tough, righteous man who strives to do the right thing, even if his efforts sometimes end up having the opposite effect.
