Overview... the youngest in a big family, who uses her smarts to keep up with the rest of her siblings. Diane and her twin brother Jack were named after the John Cougar Mellencamp song – a choice made by their mother and hated by their father. Their dad Andre wants nothing more than to instill a sense of African-American heritage, which can be difficult in their very white Los Angeles neighborhood.
Personality... brilliant, mature beyond her years, and honest to a fault. To put it as bluntly as she would, Diane can be a little too honest for the rest of the Johnsons, who might be better off not knowing exactly what she thinks about them. Much to their dismay, she puts the smart in “smart-mouthed.”

Dre Johnson grew up in Compton, a tough part of Los Angeles. When he achieved success, he moved a few miles away to a nicer—but much whiter—part of town. He's trying to teach his kids to take pride in their heritage in a mostly-white environment. But his son cares more about field hockey than basketball, and his daughter's new boyfriend is not only white—he's French too!
