Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew Up… on rock and roll. He was raised by AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, and The Clash. The music seeped into his veins and he knew from a young age that he would be a rocker for the rest of his days.
Living… without much money in the bank. His dream of a rock star came to halt when he jumped off the stage to be carried by his fans – but his apathetic audience let him fall to the ground. Without any other skills, he is not sure how he will earn a living. Until now, he has been mooching off his roommate Ned who is a substitute teacher. But Ned’s bossy new girlfriend is threatening to throw him out.
Profession… substitute teacher at Horace Green Day, an elementary private school. Dewey answered a phone call intended for Ned. Realizing Dewey could take Ned’s place and make a little money, Dewey puts on a funny voice and says, “Hello, this is Ned Schneebly.” The only problem with the scheme is that Dewey has no real knowledge to pass on to the fifth grade students.
Interests… hard rock, soft rock, loud vocals, screaming guitar solos, “gut-busting” piano solos, and everything in between. Dewey is a born rock and roller.
Relationship Status… single. Dewey is a long way away from finding someone to love. He is too self-centered at this time in his life to think about anyone else. Though he has becoming close to the principal of the school, Rosalie Mullins, who turns out is a big Fleetwood Mac fan.
Challenge… inspiring his nerdy and overachieving students to become as cool as he thinks he is. Since Dewey doesn’t know anything else, he abandons all lesson plans to prepare the class for a rock and roll contest called the Battle of the Bands. He quickly assigns roles to everyone in the class, even finding something for the less musically inclined, such as “security” and “fashion” design. They turn out to be quite a talented group with a real shot. But in order to win the competition, they need to get there first. It won’t be easy to keep their plan a secret from the school and all the parents.
Personality… wild, lazy, manipulative, obnoxious, and rebellious. He knows how to talk, and knows how to make alliances and tiptoe behind people’s backs. Although he definitely has his flaws, Dewey is a likable guy due to his wit and his warm nature. And what we like about him most is his passion – Dewey lives for the music.
