Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the shadow of his successful father, who was the former Navy Judge Advocate and Attorney General of the United States. Daniel’s father died a few years ago.

Living... alone in a small one-bedroom apartment in Washington, D.C. He’s been there for 18 months, ever since he graduated from Harvard Law School.

Profession... junior lawyer in the Marines. Lt. Kaffee has a track record for plea-bargaining and has never been inside a courtroom, but he was just assigned a high-profile murder case. Two young Marines stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are accused of murder after an apparent hazing incident went too far and resulted in the death of Private Santiago.

Interests... playing baseball, watching baseball, and reading The Baseball Encyclopedia. Whenever he works at home, he holds his bat. He says he thinks better with it.

Relationship Status... single. He's too busy to date. But he's been spending all his time working with Jo, the other lawyer on the case. He thought she hated him, but she surprised him by asking him on a date. At least that’s what it sounded like.

Challenge... defending his clients even though it seems clear that their actions led to the death of a fellow Marine. In other words, they’re guilty. But as Daniel has found out with the help of Jo, the key evidence in the case is that the base commander, Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, ordered a “Code Red,” a punishment to be inflicted on Santiago. Kaffe’s clients followed that order, which ultimately killed Santiago. But to win the case, Daniel must either find someone to testify against the powerful Jessup, or somehow get the tough S.O.B. to basically confess on his own despite Daniel having zero leverage. Good luck with that.

Personality... a bit lost. He has a brilliant mind and an impressive education, but he isn’t passionate about anything except for baseball and beers. With the guidance of the more idealistic Jo, he may have finally found his calling in this tough case.
