Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew up… in New York City. Her father’s not in the picture, so her mother raised her. Her mother’s friend Luke became a father-figure to her, and she had a fairly good, stable childhood.
Living… at the center of a supernatural conspiracy. Everything was normal until she saw a group of teenagers murder someone. Now she’s seeing things no one else can see, and her mother has vanished, leaving only a cryptic message: “he’s found me.”
Profession… student. Or at least, that’s what she’s been up until now. With the disappearance of her mother she’s joined a group of people called Shadowhunters – humans infused with angels’ blood who use their supernatural abilities to wage a secret war against demons and monsters. They don’t seem too keen on her joining, but now that she knows what’s out there, what else can she do? She’s especially determined to become a Shadowhunter, as their mysterious order seems to be tied to her mother’s disappearance.
Interests… art. Like her mother, Clary loves to draw, and keeps a diary where she sketches out her emotions. She also loves to get a rise out of people. When one of the Shadowhunters tells her not to touch his weapons, she replies, “Well, there goes my plan for selling them all on eBay.” He doesn’t know what eBay is, so she clarifies, “A mythical place of great magical power.”
Relationship Status… single, so far. She and her best friend Simon were previously inseparable, but mysterious Shadowhunter Jace holds an unmistakable allure. He’s good-looking and fights evil – too bad he’s kind of a jerk.
Challenge… getting her mother back. A shadowy villain named Valentine is coming after the people closest to Clary, looking for something called the “Mortal Cup.” Clary doesn’t know what that is, but if she’s going to save her mother, she’s going to have to learn quickly. In the supernatural world, what you don’t know is often what kills you.
Personality… outgoing, sarcastic, and loyal. Clary is often ready with a quip to lighten the mood – especially when she’s talking to Jace – but when things get serious, Clary stops joking around. She is absolutely determined to find her mother, but that doesn’t prevent her from trying to absorb as much as she can about this new world. Indeed, that motivation drives her even more.
