Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in a prosperous Connecticut family, the daughter of Dr. Stephen Foster York and Sandra Whitehead York.

Living… in Manhattan. She moved there after graduating from Smith College.

Profession... curator at a Soho art gallery. With a major in art history, Charlotte has a great knowledge and eye for contemporary art. She dreams of owning her own gallery some day.

Interests… playing tennis and watching Elizabeth Taylor movies. As a child, she also used to enjoy horse riding until her beloved horse Taddy threw her off and broke her collarbone. She hasn't ridden since, but she still has a soft spot for horses. And most of all, Charalotte loves spending time with her friends Carrie, Miranda, and Samantha. Charlotte, who is traditional and can come across as prudish, is nothing like her party-loving and sexually adventurous friends. But that's probably why she likes them so much; there's a wild side of Charlotte just waiting to come out.

Relationship Status… single for too long. She's frustrated with her dating life, having had unsuccessful relationships with a Bear Stears trader, a pastry chef, a Hasidic folk artist, and many others. As she says, “I’ve been dating since I was 15. I’m exhausted! Where is he?"

Challenge… her standards. Charlotte's view on relationships seems to have been shaped by reading too many fairy tales. She seems to think that she needs a "knight in shining armour" to complete her, but we know differently – Charlotte is no damsel in distress. She is more tenacious and determined than people give her credit for.

Personality… traditional, honest, bright, and polite. Charlotte is always smiling, always optimistic, and always loyal to her friends. She sees the best in people and doesn't ever give up on life.
