Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview… a debt collector seeking penance. Charlie works for his uncle, the local mob boss, and often hangs out in his pal’s Tony’s subterranean Little Italy bar along with his fellow young low-level mobsters. His uncle condemns his friendship with Johnny Boy, a sociopath who can’t keep himself out of debt, and his affair with Theresa, an epileptic. A devout Catholic, Charlie struggles to reconcile his dual inner conflicts: God forbids his allegiance to the mob, and the mob forbids his allegiance to Johnny Boy and Theresa, the two people he loves.

Personality… sensible, peace-minded, with a heavy conscience. Charlie hosts an ongoing inner dialogue with God, and even talks with him out loud. His involvement with the mob imbues him with spiritual pain, and for Charlie, spiritual pain is worse than any temporal pain.
