Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in Africa. Cady’s parents, both zoologists, have just returned to the United States from a twelve-year research trip to Africa. Cady, who has been homeschooled until now, is having trouble adjusting to American culture.

Living… in Evanston, Illinois. Cady has witnessed life in the wild, but she’s never seen such a dangerous environment as an American high school. As she describes it: “I knew how this would be settled in the animal world. But this was girl world, and in girl world, all the fighting had to be sneaky.”

Profession… saboteur of sorts. Cady has entered into a pact with her new friends Janis and Damian to destroy the reputation of the most popular girl in school, Regina George. Regina is the definition of high school royalty and the ringleader of the group known as “the Plastics.”

Interests… learning all the complex rules of being a Plastic. For example, you’re required to wear pink on Wednesdays, and can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week. Though at first repulsed by the girls’ catty ways, Cady becomes immersed in their world and slowly starts changing. Damian and Janis would say it’s a bad change.

Relationship Status… chasing the handsome Aaron Samuels. Unfortunately, Cady finds out Aaron is Regina’s ex-boyfriend. When Regina hears that Cady is after her ex, all hell breaks loose. Cady (with the support of Janis) is ready to wage war on Regina to win Aaron.

Challenge… rising above the spiteful feuds in “girl world.” Cady, who begins to be accepted by the Plastics, soon succumbs to the pleasures of popularity. As she puts it: “Being with the Plastics was like being famous… people looked at you all the time and everybody just knew stuff about you.”

Personality… kind but naïve. Though Cady has a good heart, she has a tendency to succumb to peer pressure. After years of homeschooling, she just wants to be liked by her peers. Her innocence is her downfall, and she lets the “mean girls” take advantage of her naïveté and desperate desire to fit in.
