Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew Up… in Los Angeles, California, where she was a popular cheerleader and elected to be Prom Princess and Fiesta Queen. Buffy had a relatively normal childhood until her 15th birthday, when she discovered she was a slayer – the “one girl in the world, a Chosen One, one born with strength and skill to hunt vampires.”
Living... in Sunnydale, California. Buffy was expelled from Hemery High for burning down the gym to kill the vampires inside. Her mother subsequently decided that moving to a smaller town like Sunnydale would give Buffy a chance to start anew. Unfortunately, their quaint new hometown is awash with supernatural activity, and a “Watcher” (Rupert Giles, the school librarian) has been sent to train her as a Slayer.
Profession... reluctant hero and high school student. While destined to be a vampire slayer, Buffy initially rejects her role and wishes she could dampen her mystical powers to live out a “regular life.”
Interests... ice-skating, cheerleading, fashion, clubbing, and cheese.
Relationship Status… single. Buffy is new to town and has not had time yet to start dating seriously. There are, however, several prospects on the horizon. Angel is a mysterious and handsome stranger who keeps showing up at critical moments to help her. Owen Thurman, another student at Sunnydale High, also seems interested in her. Even though Buffy has responsibilities as a slayer, she also wants a boyfriend. As she says, "This is the 90's. The 1990's, in point of fact, and I can do both. Clark Kent has a job. I just wanna go on a date."
Challenge... constantly saving Sunnydale from demonic annihilation. With her friends Xander, Willow and Giles, Buffy forms the “Scooby Gang” that investigates all the supernatural mysteries that occur in Sunnydale.
Personality... upbeat, stubborn, and a natural leader. Buffy is in many ways a normal teenage girl, but with a core strength that enables her to withstand the trials of being a Slayer. She has a strong moral compass, and values honesty and determination. The social isolation she experiences as a Slayer allows her to grow and develop empathy towards others, particularly other outcasts like Xander and Willow.
