Overview... a young monk growing up in a medieval Ireland populated by both fairies and devout Christians. After a Viking raid left Brendan orphaned, he was raised by his uncle, the Abbot Cellach, within the walls of Kells. Now 12, Brendan is still eager to please his beloved uncle, but he also starting to become curious about life outside the abbey walls.
Personality... young, impressionable, and inquisitive. Having lived his entire life within the Abbey of Kells, Brendan's led a sheltered, innocent childhood. But that doesn't stop him from soaking in stories of other places, especially when an illuminator from the island of Iona arrives at Kells. Bright and mature for his age, Brendan is still only a child, and he's filled with a suitably child-like wonder about the world around him.

In order to finish Brother Aiden's book, Brendan must overcome his deepest fears on a secret quest that will take him beyond the abbey walls and into the enchanted forest where dangerous mythical creatures hide. Will Brendan succeed in his quest?
