Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in an unhappy horse family where his sugar cube heiress mother and alcoholic failed-novelist father took out their insecurities and anger on Bojack. They blamed him for their pain and yelled at him that he better make something of himself. Bojack found solace in his role model, the famous horse Secretariat, who encouraged him to run away from his sadness.

Living… ina Hollywood Hills mansion with his slacker housemate Todd, who came to a party at Bojack’s years ago and never left. When Bojack manages to get up off his couch, he makes his way through the flashy and ridiculous Hollywood scene.

Profession… actor, or more perhaps accurately a washed-up ’90s sitcom star. From 1987-1996 Bojack starred as The Horse on the family comedy Horsin’ Around, and since then he’s struggled to land another hit due to his notoriously difficult attitude. Bojack is adding writer to his list of jobs as he pens a memoir with the help of ghostwriter Diane Nguyen.

Interests… himself, whether it’s watching old episodes of Horsin’ Around or talking about his problems and his opinions to anyone who will listen. Oh, and drinking. A lot.

Relationship Status… a mess.In addition to his on-again/off-again relationship with his agent, the Persian cat Princess Carolyn, Bojack also has periodic unsatisfying dalliances with actresses, fans, and other Hollywood types.

Challenge… dealing with the existential dread of coming to terms with a lack of success and the possibility that he’s not a good person. As he bemoans over a scotch one night, “You know, sometimes I feel like I was born with a leak and any goodness I started with just slowly spilled out of me, and now it’s all gone. And I’ll never get it back in me. It’s too late.” Ouch.

Personality… acurmudgeonly, cynical, self-hating narcissist. But he’s self-aware and hopes there is a chance he can change for the better. And maybe he can.
