Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… as an outsider. The precocious Alan has always been a bit odd. He never made many friends in school or college, aside from one acquaintance, a handsome boy named Christopher.

Living… through the greatest calamity to ever face Europe. World War II is raging on and Great Britain is preparing to face an aerial bombardment.

Profession… code-breaker. Alan, formerly a student at Cambridge, was called up to Bletchley Park on a mission to break the Nazi’s cipher machine, called Enigma.

Interests… crosswords and puzzles. Alan possesses a rare talent for finding patterns that are invisible to most others.

Relationship Status… engaged to his colleague and fellow code-breaker, Joan Clarke. Though Alan has a secret that he’s even kept from Joan. “I care for her, I truly do,” he says. “I just don’t think that I can… pretend.”

Challenge… breaking the Enigma code, winning the war and then finally building his “universal machine.” Alan has grand plans, and doesn’t hesitate to share them with the world. He dreams of one day building a device that can think on its own.

Personality… eccentric, passionate, and brilliant. Alan doesn’t have time for social conventions like politeness. He knows that he’s a mathematical genius and that he has destiny on his side. Nothing can stop Alan from creating his beloved machine – or so he thinks.
