Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… with an interest in dinosaurs. Alan Grant, who has been always been fascinated with the extinct species, grew up to become a paleontologist.

Visiting… Jurassic Park, a brand-new theme park located on an island near Costa Rica. Dr. Grant is astonished by billionaire John Hammond’s audacious project: he has managed to clone dinosaurs from fossilized DNA. However, Grant is slightly weary of Hammond’s audaciousness: “I don’t want to jump to any conclusions, but look…Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?”

Profession… world-renowned paleontologist. Dr. Grant is no reclusive academic—he’s travelled all over the world in search of prehistoric fossils and has even made a few important scientific discoveries along the way.

Interests… dinosaurs, fossils, and anything but children. The serious Dr. Grant finds young children annoying, which makes his tour through Jurassic park with John Hammond’s grandchildren slightly excruciating.

Challenge… making it out of Jurassic Park alive. After an accident at the park, Alan finds himself lost in the tropical wilderness, pursued by dangerous dinosaurs. On top of it all, he’s been forced to watch of Hammond’s grandchildren. As he tries to explain, “T-Rex doesn’t want to be fed. He wants to hunt. You can’t just suppress 65 million years of gut instinct.”

Personality… brave and intelligent. Alan is capable of keeping calm in stressful situations. He is uniquely suited to survive a T-Rex attack and outsmart a team of velociraptors.
