Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in San Jose, California, alone. He used to live in Casper, Wyoming, with his wife and daughter, but that’s a sad story he doesn’t want to talk about.

Profession… skilled neurosurgeon and President of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Dr. Glassman oversees doctors who are incredibly talented with strong opinions and big egos.

Relationship Status… divorced. He met someone unexpectedly from work, but it’s hard to have a relationship with anyone else when he is married to his work.

Interests… eating pancakes and watching football.

Challenge… dealing with his staff. Many of them disagree with his decision to hire Dr. Shaun Murphy, who is an autistic savant. Although Shaun is a genius, his autism can make it hard to connect personally with patients. Dr. Glassman has known Shawn since he was a child, and he thinks Shaun has incredible potential. But a special meeting of the Board of Directors was called when Shaun was hired. Dr. Glassman resents that they are questioning his hiring decisions since he is the President of the hospital. He stands up to the Board, saying: “Aren't we judged by how we treat people? I don't mean as doctors. I mean as people. Especially those who don't have the same advantages that we have.”

Personality… demanding, caring, and solitary. Dr. Glassman cares his patients and fellow doctors. Although he is full of advice for Shaun and others, perhaps he should follow some of his own guidance. Dr. Glassman could lead a happier life than he is living now, and to do that, he needs to confront his painful past.
