The school idol project is set at a school between Tokyo's Akihabara, Kanda, and Jinbouchou neighbourhoods. The school faces the danger of being streamlined out of existence, so nine of its female students decide to become idols to protect their school and boost attendance.

Being just a normal student without a special talent, Makoto Naegi wins a lottery to attend the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy where only the top prodigies attend. However, instead of this being the beginning of a wonderful high school life, it's a ticket to despair, because the only way to graduate from Hope's Peak Academy is to kill one of your fellow students or be one of their victims.

Madoka Kaname might not be extremely popular, but she tries her best to be kind to everyone. It's why she tries to befriend aloof transfer student Homura. It's also why she ends up adopting Kyubey, a cute, cat-like creature who offers Madoka the chance become a "magical girl." However, there's much more to becoming a magical girl than pretty dresses, and Madoka might not be prepared for the ruthless new world she's entered.
