Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… among his own Wookie race, hairy beasts like him who shared his grunting language and crass way of life. An important member of Wookie society, Chewbacca left life on his home planet and ended up partnering with interplanetary smuggler Han Solo.

Living… on the Millennium Falcon, an old and rickety but still space-worthy cargo ship. He co-pilots the ship along with Han Solo and is generally a skilled pilot and mechanic. Alas their adventures throw quite a bit more than a wrench their way and some of the ship’s damage is irreparable, even for such an able technician. Currently Chewbacca is aiding a group of travelers who are trying to evade the watchful eye of the Empire—which makes him rather uneasy.

Profession… smuggler. Chewbacca is Han Solo’s partner-in-crime, so anything Han says goes. Though Chewbacca seems to be in complete agreement with Han, it’s definitely not Chewbacca making most of the executive decisions. Yet they both know that Chewbacca could tear anyone limb from limb, making his opinion a very important one indeed aboard the Millennium Falcon.

Interests… winning. He enjoys playing board games like dejarik, a holographic chess-like game, but hates to lose. Once when a droid starts beating him, Chewbacca utters his signature growl, a threatening gurgle that makes C-3PO reconsider the droid’s game plan: “I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookie win.”

Challenge… transporting Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and their two droids without getting killed in the process. This proves to be a lot more difficult than it might sound. Above all, the villainous Empire is hot on their tail for most of their voyage. If Chewbacca can fix up the ship enough for it to go into light-speed hyperdrive, they might stand a chance of outrunning the Imperial fleet. Otherwise, they’re in big trouble.

Personality… irritable and brutish. Chewbacca tries to get his way through grunting and growling and using his towering frame to intimidate. And although he’s often speaking a communicable language with these grunts, only a few people, including Han Solo, can actually understand him. Han does most of his translating. Even though Chewbacca and Han get in quite a few arguments, they always get along in the end, as evidenced by the affectionate nickname that Han calls him: “Chewie.”
